Since 2020, the Italian Seismic Bulletin (BSI) began the rapid review of the picking of the P and S phases, amplitudes and polarities of the first arrival for earthquakes ML ≥ 3.5 analyzed by the Seismic Surveillance Room of Rome to update the catalog of focal mechanisms of first motion polarities in near real-time (Ciaccio et al. 2021). The focal mechanisms present in the list are related only to earthquakes that have sufficient polarity measurements (minimum 10 readings) and stable solutions, without the presence of multiple solutions. In this way the BSI quickly provides a revised location and magnitude of the strongest earthquakes that occurred in Italy and the surrounding areas (for these areas the threshold is ML ≥ 4.0), therefore much before the four-monthly deadline relating to all seismicity Italian. The location parameters, values, and type of magnitude present in the list correspond to the version: Reviewed 1000 author: INGV Italian Seismic Bulletin of the terremoti.ingv.it portal.
The list shows all seismic events with ML ≥ 3.5 over the past 12 months that were located by the shift-working seismological analysts at the INGV Rome Surveillance Room and subsequently reviewed by the BSI emergency group analysts. This list excludes earthquakes recorded in the areas covered by the other two INGV operating rooms: the Vesuvius Observatory (OV) and the Etna Observatory (OE).
For those events, the location parameters and reviewed magnitudes by seismological analysts are available at the website terremoti.ingv.it
