About Us

Historically, the group of BSI analysts was formed in the 1980s when INGV was still ING. However, it was only in the last decade that it officially became a BSI working group through the ONT directorate decree (WG_BSI_2015), incorporating the technical-informatics component necessary to support its activities and setting the goal of renewing the group's operational methods. In 2015, there were 33 staff members.
In 2024, a new decree (WG_BSI_2024) establishes the working group, defining within it a Coordination Committee and a subgroup called "BSI in Emergency" consisting of analysts and scientific consultants who are activated in the event of a seismic emergency or sequences of interest (Annex_2024).
The BSI working group is a cross-sectional team at the INGV-Rome Sections that includes researchers, technologists, CTER, technical and administrative operators, aimed at carrying out activities related to the organization, compilation, dissemination, and development of the Italian Seismic Bulletin (BSI).

The activities of the BSI Working Group are divided into Macro Areas as follows:
  • DATA ANALYSIS MANAGEMENT: organization of work for updating metadata, coordination of analysts, review, and quality control of data processed by analysts.
  • ONGOING TRAINING FOR ANALYSTS: organization of refresher courses for analysts, discussion meetings with analysts to resolve issues encountered during data analysis, courses/tutoring for new analysts.
  • ITALIAN SEISMIC BULLETIN (BSI) IN EMERGENCY: organization of activities in the event of strong events or sequences of interest.
  • VALORIZATION: organization of activities related to conferences, internal seminars at INGV, publications in journals.
  • MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION OF THE WEBSITE: organization of activities related to the design and maintenance of the new BSI website.
  • INSTITUTIONAL PUBLICATIONS: organization of work for producing Annals of Geophysics annual report and BSI four-monthly reports.
  • RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT: identification, development, and testing of new tools for analysis and valorization of BSI data.
  • DATA QUALITY, ANALYSIS TOOLS FOR THE BULLETIN, DATABASE: interface between the group of analysts and the groups working on data quality (UF3 Archive and data sharing) and on surveillance-room tools and database (UF2 Operational Room).
